On my 2022 Mini Granny Square Temperature Blanket, I added a heart square to November 21st: the day my grandmother passed away. Some of you asked how I did it, so I spent a while trying to figure out how I did it and how to make it look a little better. This is the square I settled on.
With Valentines Day coming up, I’m sure this could be implemented into all kinds of lovely crocheted crafts. If you’re working on this mini granny square temperature blanket, too, this square will fit perfectly into your blanket to commemorate special days! It could be birthdays or any kind of anniversary. In fact, this is a sample swatch I made, combining the mini granny square, the heart square, and the first row of the border you can find in the blanket instructions in my Etsy Shop.

You can find a full video tutorial on TikTok here, and you do not need the app or an account in order to watch it from whatever device you’d like. I’m still working on making a YouTube channel, on top of figuring out how to make this an efficient site. One step at a time… it’s pretty overwhelming.

Basically, you ch4 and join it to the first chain to make a ring. Into the ring: 3dc, 2hdc, dc, tc, dc, 2hdc, 3dc, ch2, and slip stitch to the ring. Tada, you have a heart!
The second round is joined in the double crochet next to the treble crochet, indicated in the diagram. From there, ch2, dc, ch1, skip a stitch, hdc, 2hdc, ch2, 2hdc, dc into the heart ring, ch1, dc into the heart ring again, and when you continue, skip the ch2 of the heart and work 2hdc into the next dc, then ch2, 2hdc, hdc, ch1, skip a stitch, dc, and then into the same stitch, work: dc, tc, ch2, dc, hdc. Then ch1, skip a stitch, which is the tc stitch of the heart. You’ll be working into the stitch you joined to when beginning the second round. Work a hdc, dc, ch2, and tc into that stitch, then join to the top of the ch2 you began with.
If you want a printable version of the diagram, including full color and joining instructions, you can find that here in my Etsy shop.
I hope you find this helpful!
